The Best Times to Renovate Your Home
Living in Michigan goes hand in hand with unpredictable weather year round, regardless of what month or season it may be.
In light of those indecisive weather patterns, choosing the perfect time to remodel your home can be a little tricky, especially if your project is a tedious one.
To make it easy on you, we decided to go month to month and break down what projects you should consider knocking out during each one. This will save you from wasting time, money, and dealing with those pesky tension headaches that come with unorganized renovation planning.
Your monthly home improvement planning starts now.
January – Focus on the Floors
January is the month that you should be exploring different flooring options. With the new year upon you, the floors of your home should make a statement. So whether your considering a simple deep clean of your carpets or dancing around the idea of installing new flooring, January is the month to do it.
Also keep in mind that many flooring companies purge leftover stock at this time, so there’s a good amount of sales and clearance pricing you can take advantage of. It doesn’t get better than installing new floors at a fraction of the price.
February – Kitchen and Bath
Although these projects take time to plan out, winter is a great time to get these ones out of the way. Many contractors have more time when projects hit their inbox, and materials are more available at these times. Of course, in light of current events, those times and availability may fluctuate a bit. Regardless, February is an ideal time to explore getting these projects completed.
Also consider handling your painting projects during this time of the year. Adding new paint can be a great way to kick off the new year with a new look.
March – Gutter Service
Since March is an interesting back and forth between spring and winter, many landscaping projects are still on hold. However, this is a great time to service your gutters and prepare them for the upcoming rainy season. Backed up or broken gutters can lead to some serious issues around your home’s foundation and to your existing landscaping ventures.
April – Deck Days
April has some reliable warm weather, so this is a great time to consider starting up your deck projects. Windows and fences are also solid projects to focus on as well. There’s nothing better than having a beautiful new deck for all your barbeque get togethers that you have planned for the summer!
May – Air Conditioning
With the arrival of May comes humidity, so this is not the time where you want to have air conditioning issues. Make sure to have a specialist come by and take a look at your unit and, if there is anything wrong, get it back into proper working order.
Side note: Consider adding a new door or a storm door to limit heat getting into your house. This will also make your home feel more open and fresh.
June / July – Power Washing and Windows
At this point, your outdoor patios and porches have had some decent foot traffic. June and July are great for giving these places a good power wash to remove any grime and dirt from the cement. Also take a look at any of your old, ineffective windows and consider getting those renewed.
August – All about the Paint
With the consistent temperatures in August, exterior painting is the project to pay attention to. A good tip to keep in mind when painting out on a sunny day is to position your painting where there’s shade. Avoid painting in direct sunlight.
You can also plan ahead for the upcoming chilly months by checking the status of your roof and fixing up any issues. The last thing you need is an ice dam build up that produces a pesky leak.
September – Garage Doors
This is a great time of the year to take a look at your garage doors. Adding all the opening and shutting those doors will do with driving the kids to school every morning, it’s a good idea to give them a tune up or replace them if needed. Make sure you take a peek at those gutters and confirm they are cleared out for the upcoming autumn season.
October / November – Landscaping
If the weather permits, October and November is when you’ll want to focus on getting any landscaping done, especially since fall is perfect for fertilization and aeration purposes. Make sure to think about insulation with the winter season rapidly approaching as well. Don’t forget to plastic wrap those windows to keep heat in and the bill low as well!
December – Remodeling Opportunities
As long as you don’t mind some extra hustle and bustle during your holiday planning, now is a good time to have siding and roofing work done, as long as it’s safe of course. Since it’s outdoor work, it won’t muck up anything inside the home while you prepare for the in-laws. Carpet is also a good thought to consider to give your home a fresh look for the upcoming new year.
